I want Terry to tell us about the old wind up phones. I've seen them before, I don't recall anyone using one.
Rotary phones I remember. Especially the "dailing" sound.

I have an old I'm thinking 1930's maybe 40's heavy black rotary phone I was given when Bethlehem Steel shut down. It was in my boss's office tucked back in a closet and I asked for it. Its in my office now as a conversation piece and it works great!
Steve, you got that dialing sound down perfect! Zic... di-di-di-di-di-did. LOL! I've seen those wind-up phones in novelty stores but never saw one actually working.
When I was a kid we had party lines. Ah, excuse me Henrietta...I'm using the phone~~~thanks!

K, now I need to wipe off the ink on my monitor screen. LOL That's pretty funny.
I'm not sure. Probably the number that starts with 8. I think there is one "di" for each number.

It's the old wind up phones that I don't remember anyone using, except in the movies.
Oh you mean the Bonnie&Clyde phones with the mouthpiece either on a stand or wall unit and the cone shaped ear piece. Well I'm not quite that old but I have actually had the opportunity to see them in use.
My sister, mom, aunt and I took the Greyhound bus out to Peach Springs Arizona to pick up a car that had been stolen. When we got to the gas station where the car had been stored the owner needed to call the sheriff. He picks up this antique, two piece desk phone with no dial at all... he clicked the receiver a few times and then said "Shirley, can you get me the sheriff, I thinks he's at 24?" It turned out they only had two digit phone numbers there and everyone knew the operator. While we waited and had tires put on the car we went to the cafe across the street... they had the wall mount phone with the crank handle to make to switchboard ring. Believe it or not this was in July 1967!Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

I think you're correct... there is one click for each number. The main problem with clicking it out by the cradle is going fast enough to register but not so fast you lose count... I used to be pretty good at it.Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

I can remember when phones didn't have a dial. You picked up the receiver and the operator would ask what number you wanted. Then she would connect you. My cousin lived in the country. They had a wooden phone that hung on he wall. I can't remember if it had a crank, but it had a big dry cell in the basement.

Eaves dropping eh? LOL
One of the ring tones available for cell phones sounds like the old rotary phone ring. My son uses one that sounds like a quacking duck. Very strange.
