A Mosque At Ground Zero?
By Jeff Jacoby
Globe Columnist / June 6, 2010

Is GROUND ZERO the right place for a major new mosque and Islamic cultural center? Cordoba House is a 15-story, $100 million development to be built just 600 feet from where the World Trade Center stood; the plans include the mosque, a 500-seat auditorium, swimming pool, restaurant, and bookstore.

Discuss

COMMENTS (156)
The prospect of an Islamic center so close to ground zero is, not surprisingly, controversial. Many relatives of Sept. 11 victims are strongly opposed. One group, 9/11 Families for a Safe & Strong America, calls Cordoba House “a gross insult to the memory of those who were killed on that terrible day.’’ But the project also has strong political support. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer are among its backers, and Cordoba House was endorsed by lower Manhattan’s Community Board No. 1 in a near-unanimous vote last month.

Of particular interest are the views of leading Muslim moderates — Muslims known for their commitment to tolerance and pluralism, and for their opposition to all forms of radical Islam.

One such individual is Zuhdi Jasser, a physician, US Navy veteran, and founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy.

Jasser reminisced last week about his family’s history of building mosques in the heartland communities where they lived. His parents, Syrian immigrants to the United States, helped create the Fox Valley Islamic Center in Neenah, Wis., in 1980. “This was during the Iranian hostage crisis,’’ he recalled, “and some of the local residents wanted the Zoning Commission to prevent the mosque from going forward.’’ But the commissioners gave their blessing to the project, and the modest mosque — the construction budget was just $80,000 — became part of the neighborhood. Later the family later moved to western Arkansas, where they joined with others to create the Islamic Center of Fort Smith. As recently as March, Jasser came out in support of Muslims in Sheboygan, Wis., whose plans for a new place of worship were meeting with vocal resistance.

But he adamantly opposes the ground zero mosque.

“For us, a mosque was always a place to pray, to be together on holidays — not a way to make an ostentatious architectural statement,’’ Jasser said. “Ground zero shouldn’t be about promoting Islam. It’s the place where war was declared on us as Americans.’’ To use that space for Muslim outreach, he argues, is “the worst form of misjudgment.’’

Equally opposed is Stephen Suleyman Schwartz, a devout Muslim and director of the Center for Islamic Pluralism in Washington.

Schwartz notes that the spiritual leader of the Cordoba Initiative, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, describes himself as a Sufi — a Muslim focused on Islamic mysticism and spiritual wisdom. But “building a 15-story Islamic center at ground zero isn’t something a Sufi would do,’’ according to Schwartz, also a practitioner of Sufism. “Sufism is supposed to be based on sensitivity toward others,’’ yet Cordoba House comes across as “grossly insensitive.’’ He rejects Rauf’s stance that a highly visible Muslim presence at ground zero is the way to make a statement opposing what happened on 9/11. Better, in his view, is the approach of many Muslims “who hate terrorism and who have gone privately to the site and recited prayers for the dead silently and unperceived by others.’’

Ali al-Ahmed, a Saudi native who founded the Institute for Gulf Affairs and is an advocate for civil rights and religious freedom in the Middle East, hopes for the best from Cordoba House. “A mosque should be a good thing,’’ he told me. But he worries about the number of Americans who may be “hurt and upset’’ by the project, and wonders whether a mosque is really the best thing for Muslims to build so close to ground zero. Why not something less emotionally charged, he asks — a social-service agency, perhaps, or an assisted living center for the elderly?

Muslims must take the feelings of Americans into account, Ahmed contends. He cites no less an Islamic authority than the Imam Ali, Mohammed’s influential son-in-law. “Reconciliation of your differences,’’ says Imam Ali in the collection of teachings known as the Peak of Eloquence, “is more worthy than all prayers and fasting.’’

A mosque at ground zero?

Will a mosque at ground zero make reconciliation more likely? Will it needlessly rub salt in the unhealed wounds of 9/11? Post your thoughts folks. Do you believe this is really about "tolerance" or do Muslims and Radical Islam have an agenda? I'll weigh in later.

What Could Possibly Be Wrong About Building A Mosque Named Cordoba at Ground Zero?

By Abdullah Al Araby

The news is out. The Muslims of America are planning to build a $100 million mosque across the street from 9/11’s Ground Zero in New York City. So far, for most Americans there is nothing notable about such news. We are getting used to seeing magnificent multimillion dollar mosques spring up here and there throughout our nation. Little do we realize the extent to which such mosques serve multi-purposes beyond their stated functions as educational centers and places of worship for Muslims. In addition, they are advertisements for gaining converts to Islam. As you will soon understand, the Ground Zero Mosque signals something very significant to the entire Islamic World.

America is the global symbol for religious freedom. We even demonstrate tolerance for religions like Islam that do not show the same tolerance for Americans who want to build churches in Islamic nations. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, Christians are not allowed to build a church on its soil. In Egypt; Coptic Christians need a Presidential Decree of approval to build a church. In addition, such approvals require red tape security clearances that can take decades to obtain.

But, our attitude is, “that is just the way it is in the Islamic World.” For us, the contrast between them and us is expected in matters about religious tolerance.

But, do we really understand the extent of the contrast?

America is a huge country encompassing fifty states. The States are already saturated with over 1200 mosques that have been built in recent years. When Muslims ask for a permit to build a new mosque, nobody ask if there is a need for another mosque. Nobody is required to give an answer. Our attitude is let them build whatever they like, wherever they like. It is of no problem to us. .

However, alarms of some sort ought to arise when a new mosque is planned just a few hundred feet away from where the Twin Towers once stood. Alarms should sound that it was Muslim terrorists that brought down the Twin Towers and took 3,000 lives while doing so. That should spark some pointed questions in the minds of conscientious Americans.

What message is the building of the Ground Zero Mosque sending to Americans? The message is clear; it is a reminder of the defeat of America by Muslims in the Battle of Manhattan on September 11, 2001. The defeat caused the towers of the World Trade Center, the symbol of the American economy, to collapse. In its place, Muslims are planning a 13 story Islamic Center that will cost 100 million dollars. The proposed Islamic Center will consist of a museum, a library, and a mosque. The top floor will feature skyscraper minaret. Five times daily, Muslims will be called to prayer from that minaret. The Arabic prayers will be blasted over loud speakers down upon the very spot where over 20,000 victim body parts were collected in the aftermath of that horrible day.

It is a humiliating message to America. It is an insult to the country that generously provided safe havens to Muslims, many of whom were persecuted in their Islamic mother countries.

And, what message will this send to the families of the victims of September 11, 2001? About 3,000 people were killed on that tragic day. Those people never harbored any animosity towards Islam or Muslims. They never pointed a gun at Muslims. They never uttered unkind words about Muslims. Nevertheless, they found themselves facing terrifying deaths. Some burnt to death. Many died by toxic smoke inhalations. Others jumped to their deaths to get relief from the flames. Countless others were blown to bits by the crashing planes and their body parts were scattered throughout the area. .

But, the insult intensifies with the name the Muslims plan to give their new mosque!

The name of the proposed mosque is The Cordoba Mosque.

A little glance back in Islamic history will reveal the significance of naming a mosque on American soil the Cordoba Mosque. We must travel back in time to the hegira period of 622 A.D. The hegira period began after Mohammad moved his headquarters in Arabia from Mecca to Medina. That is when he was transformed from an eccentric religionist to a Jihad warlord. During that era his armies conquered much of the Mediterranean World including Andalusia in Spain. Huge sections of civilization were conquered by Muslims and became part of the Islamic Empire. It was ruled by the Umayyad dynasty with Damascus as its capital. After the fall of the Umayyad dynasty and the rise of the Abbasid dynasty, a bitter war took place to eliminate the Umayyad rulers in all of the empire. However, Muslims in Andalusia chose a young man of the Umayyad by the name of Abdel Rahman Aldakhel to be their ruler. Aldakhel was one of few Umayyads that was able to escape the Abbasid crush.

Aldakhel ruled Andalusia for 34 years and was credited with many accomplishments. His greatest feat was initiating the project of building the Cordoba Mosque. The mosque started a little after the First Hegira Century. As time passed it was enlarged by subsequent rulers. It was completed 250 years later. It was acclaimed as the benchmark of Islamic architecture.

Until this day, Muslims sing the praises of The Cordoba Mosque. The mosque was said to be an architectural master piece, the best structure ever designed by Muslim engineers.

However, after the fall of Cordoba to Spain, some 774 years ago, the mosque was turned into a Catholic church. From that day until this, it is heavily guarded by Spanish police. Spanish authorities refused to give the mosque back to Muslim rulers. They would not sell it back to them no matter what price was offered. At this juncture in history, Muslims are forbidden to even pray at the site

The picture will get clearer about what the Cordoba title means for the Ground Zero Mosque when you understand the following fact and ask the following questions. The fact is the building site was formerly owned by the Catholic Church. Could the Cordoba Mosque project in Manhattan, New York possibly be a settling of ancient scores with the Christian World for what happened to the ancient Cordoba Mosque in Andalusia, Spain centuries ago? Is the fact that the mosque is to be built a few hundred feet from the site of the Battle of Manhattan significant? Could it be that the Muslims are signaling something that Americans would never guess? Shouldn’t we be a little suspicious to learn that much of the funding is coming from Islamic strongholds that aid and abet terrorists? Is it possible that the building of the Cordoba Mosque near 9/11’s catastrophic site is the Islamic World’s prideful celebration of the defeat of the greatest military force in the world? Does it give them ongoing good cause to rejoice over the two towers of the World Trade Center crumbling into ashes and piles of debris? The Islamic World is very much into symbolisms. On September the 11th, 1683 the Muslim Jihad armies were defeated at Europe’s door. The timing of the 9/11/2001 attack on America’s shores was not coincidental. It was a signal to the home of the free and Christians everywhere that Islam has regained its strength and is back with a vengeance. Are we wise to think there are no correlations between the Muslim loss of the Cordoba Mosque 1000 years ago and rebuilding another of the same name in present day America?

But, of what benefit is for anyone to dig up old memories remindful of bitterness that affected almost everybody. In that event, memory wouldn’t forget the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia that was built in the 6th Century in Istanbul, Turkey. The conquering Muslims turned it into a mosque for 5 centuries. It has subsequently been changed into a museum.

An important question needs to be posed. Is the planned building of the new Cordoba Mosque in New York a genuine attempt to bring healing and peace amongst people of different faiths? Or, is it a call to reopen old wounds and to cause streams of blood to run?

Surely, the building of that mosque does not help the efforts of reconciliation between followers of different religions in America. If I were a Muslim, I would object to building the mosque. My concern would be that building a mosque on the designated site at this time would be inappropriate. Naming the edifice the Cordoba Mosque does not serve the best interest of anyone. If American Muslims and the Islamic World at large really want peace they should realize that building a Cordoba Mosque near Ground Zero is an inflammatory and provocative act of grotesque proportions.

If American Muslims intend to really honor the martyrs of September 11, here is a suggestion that would do it. They can buy full-page ads in major newspapers and on major TV networks around the country to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. The gist of the ads could state something like this: “On the occasion of the tenth commemoration of the attack of September 11, 2001, we, the Muslims of America, unconditionally condemn the attack as evil attack. We condemn the terrorists and the terrorist organization that planed and funded it. We deeply regret that Islamic religious texts were used to justify violence and the killing of innocent people. We declare that we honor those who died and those who were injured on that day. We send our sincere condolences to their families and loved ones. On behalf of every Muslim in the world, we apologize to the United States.”

Actually the American Muslims did something similar a few days after the
attacks. They issued a formal condemnation of the attacks. They did it long
before the patriotic White Americans started killing them.Treating any American
like their nationalities overseas does is a good way to let them know that we
are not the compassionate and understanding Christians we pretend to be.
I have no idea what Muhammad taught, but Jesus never taught "If They do it to
You in a foreign country, do it to them in Your country."

The article above was not written by a "white American". It was written by Abdullah Al Araby.

It was written by an Arab American that has knowledge of both Islam and the Islamic world.

The author makes it clear in his other writings that the Muslims have an agenda for world domination.
They already claim that 25 percent of the world is Muslim. They are building mosques in America as fast as they can.
These are the same folks that drove jets with full fuel tanks into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. They had a fourth jet on the way to the White House. Does anyone remember that?

The author of the article has the guts to call it what it was. The Battle of Manhattan.
It was war declared on American soil. An attack, not on armed military, but on unsuspecting civilians.

Most folks don't know it, but the Quran actually gives Muslims permission to lie in order to promote Islam.
In fact it is encouraged. For more information about that, read the article from the link below.

A lot of people probably have no idea that Jehovah's Witnesses teach that Jesus lied when he felt it better to do so. This is one message I find very disturbing since they base THEIR lies on that premise. They teach withholding the facts from those undeserving is following Jesus' example.

I don't remember the title off hand but they have a big green, two volume set that is a sort of dictionary/encyclopedia of JW key words and Bible views. If you find one, just look under the word "lie" if you don't believe me!
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Actually I didn't say anything about the writer being white American.
To put a lot of faith in it is still paranoia.
Spreading conspiracy theories is the present fad.It will go away
eventually and everyone will find something else to spread around.
Maybe we're going through a second Mcarthy era.

I live in Houston and I know of several along with many other religious places here.
I think the constitution says something about that......
"Don't ask me silly questions
I won't play silly games
I'm just a simple choo choo train
And I'll always be the same.

I only want to race along
Beneath the bright blue sky
And be a happy choo choo train
Until the day I die."

Yup. We have religious freedom now.

Once the population is more than 50 percent Muslim you can kiss that goodbye.

Not one of them have ever threatened my freedom or anyone else that I know.
There are some Baptist,Methodist,Aog,Catholic,Lutheren,LSD,Church of Christ
and others here too. They haven't threatened my freedom yet,although the Baptist
church told me before they would give me any food, I had to attend Sabbath services
five days away. I still had my freedom, just no food.

I made a mistake. There are 18 Mosques in Houston.
There are over 40 in Texas. I guess they've been so
quite I never knew about them. There are 85 businesses
in Dallas run by Muslims. I think they all pay taxes and
spend money here.

If Islam Ruled America

By Abdullah Al Araby

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Islam is more than a religion; It is a comprehensive way of life. The Quran (believed by Muslims to be God's word), and the Hadith (Mohammed's sayings as recorded by Al Bukhari), prescribe numerous regulations governing every aspect of the social, political, economical, as well as religious life. The belief that "Islam is a religion and a state" is an integral part of the Islamic religion.
Let's examine what Islam would do if it ruled America. What would happen to the values and institutions that we hold dear?
First: Liberty
The United States was built on the Bill of Rights, established by the founding fathers who came here to escape religious oppression. The Constitution gives citizens the right to express themselves as they please, to criticize the president if they believe he is wrong, to worship in the way they want and to act in any way they see appropriate as long as they don't violate the rights of others.
What would happen to this freedom in an Islamic state? Would the citizens be granted the right to choose the religion they want, or would they be forced into Islam according to the Quranic verse: "If any one desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him, and in the hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost." (Surah 3:85). How about the right of a Muslim to change his own religion? Would he be given this right or would he be punished according to the apostasy rule which states that such a person should be punished by death? Mohammed said "Whoever changes his religion, kill him." Al Bukhari Vol. 9:57
Do Muslim activists want us to have the same rights granted to the citizens of an Islamic country such as Saudi Arabia, where women are not allowed to drive an automobile and no one can worship openly according to any religion other than Islam? Do they want us to be ruled by a ruler such as Khomeini, who issued an order to murder a writer, Salman Rushdie, just because he dared to criticize Islam ? Even in a moderate Islamic state such as Egypt, Christians have to obtain a presidential decree to be able to build a church. They face discrimination in all aspects of their lives, including education, employment and promotions.
Second: Democracy
Our present system in the USA gives the citizens the right to rule themselves, to write the laws that will govern their lives, to decide the amount of taxes to be collected from them and how it will be spent.
One important principle in this great system is the separation of church and state. Islam, however, is built on an opposing concept, for "Islam is a religion and a state." According to Islam, the Quran is the principal source of legislation: "We have sent down to thee the book in truth, that you might judge men as guided by God." (Surah 4:105). If the Quran is the law, what are some of the rules and regulations that will be imposed? Here are just a few examples:
Stealing: punished by hand amputation (Surah 5:38)
Adultery: punished by public flogging (Surah 24:2)
Drinking: punished by 40 or 80 lashes (Al Bukhari 8:770)
Resisting Islam: punished by death, crucifixion or the cutting off of the hands and feet (Surah 5:33)
Prisons in Muslim countries are known to be centers of torture rather than rehabilitation.
Third: Equality
Under our system in the United States, there should be no discrimination among citizens based on sex, color, religion or race. Would Islam treat men and women equally when:
- It teaches that men are superior to women (Surah 2:228)
- It gives men double the share of the women in inheritance? (Surah 4:11)
- It gives the man double the value of a woman's witness in court? (Surah 2:282)
- Would Islam treat non-Muslims fairly when:
- The Quran calls on Muslims not to befriend Jews or Christians? (Surah 9:30)
- The Quran imposes "Jizya" (tribute tax) on Christians and Jews that will be collected only from them and not from Muslims? (Surah 9:29)
- Mohammed says that a Muslim may not be killed if he kills a non- Muslim. " No Muslim should be killed for killing a kafir (infidel or non- Muslim) ."Al Bukhari Vol. 9:50
Could Islam someday rule America?
Islam is the fastest growing religion in America. Today, the number of followers of Islam in the United States has reached 4 to 6 millions. It is a matter of time before Islam will become the religion of the majority. America, then will be labeled an " Islamic country ", ruled by the "Quran" and the "Hadith" or what Muslims call Sharia (The Islamic code of ethics).
My fellow Americans
The threat of Islam is real. More so than communism ever was, because with Islam, Muslim activists are willing to kill and to die for the cause of spreading their religion. This is called ""Jihad", a sacred duty for all Muslims to perform.
Get this message around. Stop the spread of Islam before it is too late.
ON THE ROAD TO THE NEW WORLD
Examining Islam's Expansionist History
By Abdullah al-Araby
Muslims often claim that Islam is the world's fastest growing religion. This boast empowers them with increased fervor as they race down the road for conquest of the New World. They argue that the number of new adherents embracing Islam is an indication of Allah's vindication and Islam's appeal as the only true religion. They ask, "How could so many people be wrong?" Hand in hand with this, Muslims cite another equally important claim, that Islam has a lower attrition rate than other faiths.
Undisputedly, Islam is growing rather rapidly, but there is no scientific evidence for the claim that Islam is the world's fastest growing religion. The purpose of this article is not to dispute the fact that Islam is growing, but to demonstrate that the reasons for Islam's growth can be attributed to factors that have very little to do with Islam's merits. To accomplish this we will explore the reasons and implications behind the phenomenon of the spread of Islam during historical and contemporary times.
First, we will acquaint you with some of the Islamic principles that serve as the force behind Islam's expansionist mentality.
Islam's ultimate goal is to rule the world. Islamic theology provides two methods for this to be accomplished. The first is spiritual, as people are lured into conversion. The second is coercive; it is the political/physical conquest of nations. For Muslims, there are no gray areas. They see the world in black and white. To them the world is divided into two big camps: the House of Islam and the House of War. The House of Islam are the Muslims, and the House of war are the non-Muslims. Muslims (the House of Islam) are in a constant state of spiritual/political/physical warfare with Non-Muslims (the House of War) until they subjugate them into Islam.
Islam always employs a carrot and stick policy. The carrot and stick that is perpetually set before Muslims is the expectation of generous rewards in this life and in eternity for those who fight for Islam. On the other hand, those who falter are warned of severe temporal and eternal punishments.
Apostasy from Islam is not an option. Once-a-Muslim-always-a-Muslim, the only official alternative is death. There is no room for changing one's mind. The door is wide open to join Islam, but there is no backdoor for those that would like to leave it.
