JOURNALIST: No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us. At midnight on the twelfth of August, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across two hundred million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us, came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. As I watched, there was another jet of gas. It was another missile, starting on its way. And that's how it was for the next ten nights. A flare, spurting out from Mars - bright green, drawing a green mist behind it - a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight. Ogilvy, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger. He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote, forbidding planet. 'The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one,' he said. 'The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one - but still they come!' JOURNALIST: Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought to be an ordinary falling star, but next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the Common, and Ogilvy came to examine what lay there: a cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot... and with faint sounds of movement coming from within. Suddenly the top began moving, rotating, unscrewing, and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside, trying to escape. he rushed to the cylinder, but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal. 'The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one,' he said. 'The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one - but they still come!' 'Yes, the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one,' he said. 'The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one - but they still come!' It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. From the railway station came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance. It all seemed so safe and tranquil. Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed, Then one day he was shootin at some food, And up through the ground came a bubblin crude. Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea. Well the first thing you know ol Jed's a millionaire, Kinfolk said "Jed move away from there" Said "Californy is the place you ought to be" So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly. Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars. Well now its time to say good by to Jed and all his kin. And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in. You're all invited back a gain to this locality To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality Hillybilly that is. Set a spell, Take your shoes off. Y'all come back now, y'hear?. The Merry Minuet The Kingston Trio Words and Music by Sheldon Harnick
-From their 1959 LP "From the Hungry"
They're rioting in Africa (whistling) They're starving in Spain (whistling) There's hurricanes in Flo-ri-da (whistling) And Texas needs rain The whole world is festering with unhappy souls The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch AND I DON'T LIKE ANYBODY VERY MUCH!!
But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud For man's been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud And we know for certain that some lovely day Someone will set the spark off AND WE WILL ALL BE BLOWN AWAY!!
They're rioting in Africa (whistling) There's strife in Iran What nature doesn't so to us Will be done by our fellow man.

Rainstorm, brainstorm, faces in the maelstrom Huddle by the puddles in the shadows where the drains run Hot dogs, wet clogs clicking up the sidewalk Disappearing into the booze shop Rainbow queues stand down by the news stand, waiting for the late show Pin ball, sin hall, minds in free fall Chocolate-coloured ladies making eyes through the smoke-pall Soho (needless to say) I'm alone on your streets on a Friday evening I've been here all of the day I'm going nowhere with nowhere to go Football supporters taking the waters They're looking round for the twilight daughters Non-stop strip club pornographic bookshop Come into the back and take your time and have a good look Old man laughs with flowers in his hair Newspaper headline "Midde East Deadline" Jazz musicians are down on the breadline Soho (needless to say) I'm alone on your streets on a Friday evening I've been here all of the day I'm going nowhere with nowhere to go Soho feeds the needs and hides the deeds, the mind that bleeds Disenchanted, downstream in the night Soho hears the lies, the twisted cries, the lonely sighs Till she seems lost in dreams The sun goes down on a neon eon Though you'd have a job explaining it to Richard Coeur de Lion Animation, bar conversation, anticipation, disinclination Poor old wino turns with dust in his eyes Begs for the dregs from the bottom of the kegs, man You've never seen a lady lay down and spread her legs like Soho (needless to say) I'm alone on your sheets on a Friday evening I've been here all of the day I'm going nowhere with nowhere to go Soho (needless to say) I'm alone on your streets, or am I dreaming I've been here all of the day I'm going nowhere with nowhere to go Al Stewart "Don't ask me silly questions I won't play silly games I'm just a simple choo choo train And I'll always be the same.

Extreme ways are back again Extreme places I didn't know I broke everything new again Everything that I'd owned I threw it out the window; came along Extreme ways I know will part the colors of my sea perfect colored me Extreme ways they help me They help me out late at night Extreme places I had gone That never seen any light Dirty basements, dirty noise Dirty places coming through Extreme worlds alone Did you ever like it planned? I would stand in line for this There's always room in life for this Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart(x2) Extreme sounds that told me They held me down every night I didn't have much to say I didn't give about the life I closed my eyes and closed myself And closed my world and never opened up to anything That could get me at all I had to close down everything I had to close down my mind Too many things could cut me Too much could make me blind I've seen so much in so many places So many heartaches, so many faces So many dirty things You couldn't even believe I would stand in line for this It's always good in life for this Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart(x20 Oh Baby, oh baby Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Like it always does, always does Moby "Don't ask me silly questions I won't play silly games I'm just a simple choo choo train And I'll always be the same.

I've Got A Tiger By The Tail, it's plain to see; I won't be much when you get thru' with me. Well, I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale. Looks like I've Got A Tiger By The Tail. Well, I thought the day I met you, you were meek as a lamb; Just the kind to fit my dreams and plans. But now, the pace we're livin' takes the wind from my sails And it looks like I've Got A Tiger By The Tail. I've Got A Tiger By The Tail, it's plain to see; I won't be much when you get thru' with me. Well,I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale. Looks like I've Got A Tiger By The Tail. Well, ev'ry night you drag me where the bright lights are found; There ain't no way to slow you down I'm as 'bout as helpless as a leaf in a gale; And it looks like I've Got A Tiger By The Tail. I've Got A Tiger By The Tail, it's plain to see; I won't be much when you get thru' with me. Well,I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale. Looks like I've Got A Tiger By The Tail. Once upon a time in China Some believe around the year, one-double aught-three. Head priest of The White Lotus Clan Pai Mei Was walking down the road Contemplating whatever a man with Pai Mei's infinite power would contemplate Which is another way of saying, who knows. When, a Shaolin monk appeared on the road traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths... Pai Mei in a practically unfathomable display of generosity Gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod, was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei ? Or, did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk, remain unknown. What is known, were the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple, And demanded that the temple's head Abbot offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot, at first, tried to console Pai Mei, only to find, Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began, the massacre of the Shaolin Temple, And all sixty of the monks inside, At the fists of the White Lotus. And so began, the legend of Pai Mei's Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique. There's a nail in the door And there's glass on the lawn Tacks on the floor And the TV is on And I always sleep with my guns when you're gone There's a blade by the bed And a phone in my hand A dog on the floor And some cash on the nightstand When I'm all alone the dreaming stops And I just can't stand What should I do I'm just a little baby What if the lights go out And maybe and then the wind just starts to moan Outside the door he followed me home So goodnight moon I want the sun If it's not here soon I might be done No it won?t be too soon 'til I say goodnight moon There's a shark in the pool And a witch in the tree A crazy old neighbor and he's been watching me And there's footsteps loud and strong coming down the hall Something's under the bed Now it's out in the hedge There's a big black crow sitting on my window ledge And I hear something scratching through the wall What should I do I'm just a little baby What if the lights go out And maybe and then the wind just starts to moan Outside the door he followed me home So goodnight moon I want the sun If it's not here soon I might be done No it won't be too soon 'til I say goodnight moon Shivaree "Don't ask me silly questions I won't play silly games I'm just a simple choo choo train And I'll always be the same.

If you're down in Acuna and you ain't up to being alone don't spend all your money on just any honey that's grown. Go find the Mexican blackbird and send all your troubles back home. They all call her her "puta" 'cause no one really knows her name. She works the cantina, dancin' and a-lovin's her trade. Her mama was Mez'can and her daddy was the ace of spades. Oh, let's drive that old Chrysler down to Mexico, boy. Said, keep your hands on the wheel there. Oh, it sure is fine, ain't it? Now, ya got it! Hand me another one of them brews from back there. Oh, this is gonna be so good. Mm, she's hot as a pepper but smooth as a Mexican brew. So head for the border and put in an order or two. The wings of the blackbird will spread like an eagle for you. Oh, one more time, can you roll me another Bull Durham, please? Can't you do it with one hand, boy? Well here I sit high, gettin' ideas Ain't nothing but a fool would live like this Out all night and runnin' wild Woman sittin' home with a month old child CHORUS: Dang me, dang me They oughta take a rope and hang me High from the highest tree Woman would you weep for me. Just sittin' around drinkin' with the rest of the guys Six rounds bought, and I bought five Spent the half the groceries and all the rent Like fourteen dollars having twenty seven cents. Men walkin' 'long the railroad tracks Goin' someplace there's no goin' back Highway patrol choppers comin' up over the bridge Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge Shelter line stretchin' 'round the corner Welcome to the new world order Families sleepin' in their cars in the Southwest No home no job no peace no rest The highway is alive tonight But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag Preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag Waitin' for when the last shall be first and the first shall be last In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass Got a one-way ticket to the promised land You got a hole in your belly and gun in your hand Sleepin' on a pillow of solid rock Bathin' in the city aqueduct The highway is alive tonight Where it's headed everybody knows I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light Waitin' on the ghost of Tom Joad Now Tom said "Mom, wherever there's a cop beatin' a guy Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries Where there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air Look for me mom I'll be there Wherever there's somebody fightin' for a place to stand Or a decent job or a helpin' hand Wherever somebody's strugglin' to be free Look in their eyes Mom you'll see me." Well the highway is alive tonight But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light With the ghost of old Tom Joad Bruce Springsteen "Don't ask me silly questions I won't play silly games I'm just a simple choo choo train And I'll always be the same.

Ooh, dont you wanna take her? Wanna make her all your own? Maria. Youve gotta see her! Go insane and out of your mind. Latina. Ave maria. A million and one candlelights. Ive seen this thing before. In my best friend and the boy next door. Fool for love and fool of fire. Wont come in from the rain. Sees oceans running down the drain. Blue as ice and desire. Dont you wanna make her? Ooh, dont you wanna take her home? Maria. Youve gotta see her! Go insane and out of your mind. Latina. Ave maria. A million and one candlelights. Ooh, dont you wanna break her?
