On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself, this could be heaven or this could be hell Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say... AULD LANG SYNE
by: Robert Burns (1759-1796) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOBBY!
Chorus OR auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne! I Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to min'? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne? II And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp, And surely I'll be mine, And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne! III We twa hae run about the braes, And pu'd the gowans fine, But we've wander'd monie a weary foot Sin' auld lang syne. IV We twa hae paidl'd in the burn Frae mornin sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin' auld lang syne. V And here's a hand, my trusty fiere, And gie's a hand o' thine, And we'll take a right quid-willie waught, For auld lang syne! Chorus For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet For auld lang syne!

Over in Killarney Many years ago, Me Mither sang a song to me In tones so sweet and low. Just a simple little ditty, In her good ould Irish way, And l'd give the world if she could sing That song to me this day. Chorus: "Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li, Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry! Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li, Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby." Oft in dreams I wander To that cot again, I feel her arms a-huggin' me As when she held me then. And I hear her voice a-hummin' To me as in days of yore, When she used to rock me fast asleep Outside the cabin door. Irish lulaby "Don't ask me silly questions I won't play silly games I'm just a simple choo choo train And I'll always be the same.

If you listen I'll sing you a sweet little song Of a flower that's now droped and dead, Yet dearer to me, yes than all of its mates, Though each holds aloft its proud head. Twas given to me by a girl that I know, Since we've met, faith I've known no repose. She is dearer by far than the world's brightest star, And I call her my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the sweetest flower that grows. You may search everywhere, but none can compare with my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the dearest flower that grows, And some day for my sake, she may let me take the bloom from my wild Irish Rose. They may sing of their roses, which by other names, Would smell just as sweetly, they say. But I know that my Rose would never consent To have that sweet name taken away. Her glances are shy when e'er I pass by The bower where my true love grows, And my one wish has been that some day I may win The heart of my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the sweetest flower that grows. You may search everywhere, but none can compare with my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the dearest flower that grows, And some day for my sake, she may let me take the bloom from my wild Irish Rose. When Billie Holiday recorded this song it became impossible for the american people, including the politicians, to ignore the racial tension and inequality in this country. It is a powerful song.
Strange Fruit by Lewis Allen, Maurice Pearl, Dwayne Wiggins
Southern trees bearin' strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the roots Black bodies swingin' in the southern breeze Strange fruit hangin' from the Poplar trees
Pastoral scenes of the gallant south Them big bulging eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of Magnolia, clean and fresh Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck For the sun to rot, for the leaves to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop
*************** Wowza. Powerful stuff. I remember those days quite well. Sometimes I think we have come a long way since then. Other times I wonder if we have learned anything at all.

I love her voice, too. It's too bad her life was cut short by addiction. You see that so much in artists. I think it has something to do with how empathetic they are. They just can't handle all the pain and suffering they see around them, which makes them very creative, but open to addiction to escape from that pain.

Yep. I agree about addiction, creativity, etc. I had a few of her albums and cds but I lost them in the fire. I had The Decca Sessions{?} I think was the name, too. My favorite, if I had to pick one, is God Bless the Child.
Billie Holiday / Arthur Herzog Jr.
Them that's got shall get Them that's not shall lose So the Bible said and it still is news Mama may have, Papa may have But God bless the child that's got his own That's got his own
Yes, the strong gets more While the weak ones fade Empty pockets don't ever make the grade Mama may have, Papa may have But God bless the child that's got his own That's got his own
Money, you've got lots of friends Crowding round the door When you're gone, spending ends They don't come no more Rich relations give Crust of bread and such You can help yourself But don't take too much Mama may have, Papa may have But God bless the child that's got his own That's got his own
Mama may have, Papa may have But God bless the child that's got his own That's got his own He just worry 'bout nothin' Cause he's got his own
