Question

A man was found murdered on Sunday morning. His wife immediately called the police. The police questioned the wife and staff and got these alibis:
The Wife said she was sleeping.
The Cook was cooking breakfast.
The Gardener was picking vegetables.
The Maid was getting the mail.
The Butler was cleaning the closet.

The police instantly arrested the murderer. Who did it and how did they know?

(I actually figured this one out)

Answer (run your mouse pointer over the area below to see the answer)
It was the Maid. She said she was getting the mail. There is no mail on Sunday! (next day air and email doesn\'t count)

Question

An old man wanted to leave all of his money to one of his three sons, but he didn\'t know which one he should give it to. He gave each of them a few coins and told them to buy something that would be able to fill their living room. The first man bought straw, but there was not enough to fill the room. The second bought some sticks, but they still did not fill the room. The third man bought two things that filled the room, so he obtained his father\'s fortune. What were the two things that the man bought?

Answer (run your mouse pointer over the area below to see the answer)

The wise son bought a candle and a box of matches. After lighting the candle, the light filled the entire room.

Question

There were 4 people sitting in a row, trying to win $50 from a riddle.

The one in front was wearing a red hat.
The second from the front was wearing a blue hat.
The third from the front was wearing a red hat.
The last was wearing a blue hat and is blind-folded.

Each of them were informed that they are all wearing a hat, the last person is blind-folded and that there are 2 red and 2 blue hats. if they can guess the color of their hat, then they win the prize.

There was a long silence, then one of them guessed the color of his hat correctly. Who was it?

(note that they can only see the person in front of them and are not allowed to turn around and see behind them.)

Answer

It was the second person. The first and last person cannot see other people at all, therefore it is either the third or second. The second person realised that if he and the person in front were wearing the same colored hat, the third person would be able to answer the color of his hat right away. However, since there was a long silence, then the color of the his hat and the person in front must be different.

Question

Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????

Answer

The facts in this riddle are clear: There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

Look at the chart above and say the COLOR of the word, not the word itself.

Why is it so difficult?

Answer

because the right half of your brain is trying to say the color, while the left side of your brain is trying to say the word.

The 3 motel guest puzzle is great. Some folks begin the story by claiming that it has never been solved.

But another way to look at the solution is to realize that the teller wags that "27 PLUS 2" is 29 - so
where did dollar go? It should be "27 MINUS 2" is 25. And 30 minus 5 is 25. He took the 2 dollars from
the guests. 30 is no longer in play after clerk gave the bellhop the 5er.

I first heard it in the 1970s.

RAY: Once upon a time there lived a king who wished to find the wisest man in the realm to be his assistant. He summoned the three known wisest men to his court, and he administered the following test.

He says to them, “Sit down you morons. I'm going to put either a red hat or a white hat on each of your heads.” Facing them in a circle and standing behind them, he proceeds to place one red hat on each of their heads. There are no mirrors in the room. Each contestant can see just the other two contestants. The king says, “If you can see a red hat, raise your hand.”

They all raise their hands because they're each wearing a red hat. Then he says, “If you can tell what color hat you have on, stand up.” Time goes by, nothing happens. One guy looks at another guy, who looks at the other guy.

The other guy looks at him. Finally one guy stands up and he says, “I'm wearing a red hat.”

TOM: Wow!

RAY: The question is, how did he know that he was wearing a red hat?

Think you know? Drop Ray a note!

Question

After teaching his class all about roman numerals (X = 10, IX=9 and so on) the teacher asked his class to draw a single continuous line and turn IX into 6. The only stipulation the teacher made was that the pen could not be lifted from the paper until the line was complete.
(I like this one)

Answer

Draw an S in front of the IX and it spells SIX. No one said the line had to be straight happy
